Advertisements from 1942, the 14th year of HPAC Engineering magazine, then called Heating Piping and Air Conditioning.

Having entered the second world war in December 1941, the United States quickly began to mobilize car makers and other manufacturers for the production of weapons and encourage citizens to donate scrap metals and fabrics to help build tanks, guns, and ships in 1942.

With support from the United Kingdom and Canada, the United States began nuclear-weapon research with the Manhattan Project in 1942.

Duct tape was developed by the U.S. military in 1942.

In popular culture, the screen classic “Casablanca” premiered in 1942, and Bing Crosby’s famous song “White Christmas” was released in the musical film “Holiday Inn.” Meanwhile, Walt Disney’s fifth full-length animated classic, "Bambi," also debuted.

Print advertisements still focused on strong and pro-American imagery, using compelling pictures of aircraft, soldiers, Navy ships, and weapons. Calls to action included donating scrap for the war effort, enlisting in the war effort, and defending America at all costs.

This article features some of the advertisements that appeared in HPAC Engineering, then called Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning, in 1942.
