ASHRAE Revises Energy-Auditor Certification to Meet DOE Guidelines

March 7, 2017
Effective March 16, earners of ASHRAE’s BEAP certification will receive recognition by U.S. government agencies for contracts requiring energy-audit services.

Effective March 16, earners of ASHRAE’s Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certification will receive recognition by U.S. government agencies for contracts requiring energy-audit services.

“This update will not only help ensure the continued validity and relevance of ASHRAE’s energy-auditor certification, but also add value,” ASHRAE President Tim Wentz said. “DOE (Department of Energy) recognition of ASHRAE’s Building Energy Assessment Professional certification will help ensure quality services are provided by these professionals as well as increase consumer confidence in the service provided and ultimately ensure the quality and performance of buildings.”

ASHRAE’s revised energy-auditor certification program will validate competency against Better Buildings Workforce Guidelines scheme requirements for building energy auditor set forth by the National Institute of Building Sciences Commercial Workforce Credentialing Council. The goal of the adjustment is to achieve U.S. DOE recognition of services provided by certification holders by the summer of 2017.

Current ASHRAE BEAP certification holders will renew against these new scheme requirements beginning in 2018.
