USGBC Announces Top 10 Countries for LEED Green Building Outside U.S.

Aug. 19, 2015
The countries that made the list for 2015 are geographically and culturally diverse, representing seven of the world’s 20 largest single-nation economies by gross domestic product, as well as six of the top 11 emitters of greenhouse gases.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently announced the top 10 countries for the LEED green-building rating system outside of the United States.

The countries that made the list for 2015 are geographically and culturally diverse, representing seven of the world’s 20 largest single-nation economies by gross domestic product (GDP) (China, Germany, Brazil, India, Canada, South Korea, and Turkey), as well as six of the top 11 emitters of greenhouse gases (China, India, Germany, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil). (The United States is the world’s largest economy by GDP and the world’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases.)

Countries were ranked in terms of gross square meters (gsm) of LEED-certified space and number of LEED projects to date.

The United States remains the world's largest market for green building, with 276.90 million gsm of LEED-certified space, 727.34 million gsm of LEED-certified and registered space, and 53,908 LEED-certified and registered projects.
