Carrier has been honored by BACnet International with a “Best in Show” award at the 2011 Facilities Decisions Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. Carrier received the award as part of BACnet International’s “Leaders of the Pack” program, which recognizes the achievements of individuals and companies who successfully utilize the BACnet protocol in building automation through interoperability testing, educational programs, and promotional activities.

Carrier received the “Best in Show” award for its participation in a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold project for Crate & Barrel and its “Streets of Southpoint” retail store in Durham, N.C. Crate & Barrel’s “Streets of Southpoint” store had unique HVAC challenges. The HVAC system had to handle the extra heat load generated by the store’s track lighting, while providing precise humidity control to protect Crate & Barrel’s products, flooring and furniture. In addition, it was important to integrate the HVAC system with the lighting system, so a single user interface could be used to schedule both systems.

Carrier’s i-Vu Open control system was the perfect solution for Crate & Barrel’s “Streets of Southpoint” store. The system not only provides precise temperature control in an environment where the heat load is increased by over a mile of track lighting, but it also provides proper humidity control to protect store content.

In addition, the lighting was integrated seamlessly into the control system, providing store operators with flexible scheduling options using the i-Vu user interface. Andy McMillan, president of BACnet International and general manager of Philips Teletrol, explained why Carrier was recognized. “Carrier’s LEED Gold project with Crate & Barrel is the ideal example of a BACnet Success Story,” McMillan said. “Please join me in thanking and congratulating Carrier for its dedication to BACnet International and the BACnet standard.”

“We're very proud to receive recognition for advances in product innovation and our leadership in green buildings,” says Mark Barry, president, Automation & Controls Solutions, UTC Climate, Controls & Security Systems. “We're dedicated to producing and promoting innovative technologies that improve the usefulness of the BACnet standard and improve energy efficiency for the building systems market.”

Carrier has been manufacturing BACnet-based products for more than five years and has been active in the BACnet community. It joined BACnet International in 2009 to further support the BACnet standard and evolving community.
