Compare the Cost of Green Roofing With Conventional Roofing Systems
Interested in green roofing but not sure how to determine its long-term costs and benefits, especially in comparison with traditional roofs? Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), with support from Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance and the Athena Institute, released the GreenSave Calculator. This online tool lets users compare roofing alternatives over a specific time period to determine which has the lowest life-cycle cost, in comparison with conventional roofing systems...[MORE]

USGBC Final Report: PVC an Unhealthy Building Material
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released its assessment of the health and environmental impacts of polyvinylchloride plastic (PVC) building materials. The report states that PVC, also known as vinyl, is not a healthy building material...[MORE]

Sun Control and Shading Devices
By Don Prowler, FAIA; revised and expanded by Joseph Bourg
This article discusses how well-designed sun-control and shading devices in a building can dramatically reduce building peak heat-gain and cooling requirements, as well as improve the natural-lighting quality of building interiors...[MORE]

Free Tool Calculates an Individual's Energy Use
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Website offers a tool that lets consumers see how their individual energy use is affecting the earth. By adding a ZIP code, the EPA's Power Profiler calculates how much air pollution results from individual electricity use, the fuels used to produce that electricity, and how to reduce the impact...[MORE]

USGBC Announces Alignment, Harmonization of LEED Rating System
The U.S. Green Building Council has announced four steps in the evolution of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System: the harmonization and alignment of LEED credits across rating systems; technical-framework development on the "back-end" of LEED, the introduction of a regular development schedule, and improvement of the technical development, market-segment focus, and certification process of the LEED committee structure...[MORE]

Is Wal-Mart Going Green?
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. unveiled an environmental plan to boost energy efficiency, cut down on waste, reduce greenhouse gases, and use renewable-energy sources. Targets include spending $500 million a year to increase fuel efficiency in Wal-Mart's truck fleet by 25 percent over three years and 100 percent within 10 years, reduce greenhouse gases by 20 percent in seven years, reduce energy use at stores by 30 percent, and cut solid waste from U.S. stores and Sam's Club stores by 25 percent in three years...[MORE]

New York City Mayor Proposes Overhaul of Building Code
New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Buildings Commissioner Patricia J. Lancaster announced the submission of a modernized city building code, the first revision since 1968, to the City Council for review and consideration. The mayor's proposal, called the NYC Construction Codes, overhauls all aspects of New York City's construction codes, including the building code. The codes facilitate sustainable building by providing fee rebates for green design, as well as requiring more efficient heating and cooling systems, white roofs, and water-conserving plumbing systems...[MORE]

Two San Francisco Hotels Go Green
San Francisco's Orchard Garden Hotel and Kimpton's Hotel Triton ask travelers to conserve water and energy by not having linens and towels changed every day. Both hotels have installed low-flow toilets and showerheads, switched to non-toxic cleaning supplies, and print guest bills with soy-based ink on recycled paper...[MORE]

YOU NEED TO BE GREEN TO GROW!

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, the products and services market for green building is expected to exceed $12 billion in 2007. Virtually every new-construction and retrofit project undertaken today includes some element of green design.

For designers and specifiers of mechanical systems, the green-building market means huge potential for growth. HPAC Engineering's annual Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference and Expo, the only green-design event dedicated to mechanical systems in non-residential buildings, presents an opportunity for you to learn how to be "greener" and provides the knowledge and skills you need to "go for the green" in the tremendously profitable green-design arena. HPAC Engineering Co-Sponsor of Global Engineering Conference
Designed for global consulting and design engineers, Carrier Corp.'s 10th Global Engineering Conference, co-sponsored by HPAC Engineering, features new technology and engineering topics in the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry and focuses on designing and building for sustainability. The conference will take place April 9-11, 2008, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas...[MORE]
