| ASHRAE Offers Course on New Green-Building Standard |
| With the publication of a green-building standard, an updated online seminar reviewing its requirements will be available from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) on March 15. The seminar will focus on the requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, and be taught by Tom Lawrence, a member of the committee that developed the standard. | AHRI Sponsors HVACR Education/Training Workshop |
| For more than a decade, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) has sponsored an annual instructor workshop to enhance the skills and knowledge of HVACR instructors. This year, the 15th Annual Instructor Workshop will be held March 24-26 in Lansdowne, Va. In 2008, AHRI partnered with nine other organizations to host the workshop, which attracted more than 300 attendees and 40 exhibitors. [MORE] |

| December Heating-and-Cooling-Equipment Shipment Data Released |
| According to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), December 2009 brought commercial gas water heaters a 2-percent increase in shipments from 6,182 units in December 2008 to 6,279 units in December 2009. However, shipments of commercial electric water heaters dropped 16 percent to 4,053 units in December 2009, compared with 4,844 units in December 2008. Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of commercial gas water heaters dropped 14.5 percent from 88,265 units in December 2008 to 75,487 units in December 2009. During the same time period, the number of U.S. shipments of commercial electric water heaters decreased 19 percent from 68,686 units in December 2008 to 55,625 units in December 2009. [MORE] |

| An engineer is calculating the cooling load for each room to be served by a new rooftop unit. Solar and transmission heat gains through the windows, walls, and roof and internal heat gains from lights, people (sensible), and equipment add up to the room sensible heat gain (BTUHS). Latent heat gains from people and any process moisture gain (e.g., from a fountain or, in a laboratory, a water bath) add up to the room latent heat gain (BTUHl). With that information, how does the engineer determine the supply-air quantity (in cubic feet per minute) for each room and select a rooftop unit to meet the loads? [MORE] |
