Last year, we launched several green-buildings initiatives. Chief among them were our Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference, held July 20-23 in Cleveland, and our “LEED Basics for Owners, Engineers, and Design/Build Contractors” Webcast, held Dec. 1. By all accounts, both were successes, so much so that we have been eagerly planning their follow-ups ever since.

That having been said, I am pleased to announce that the second EGB Conference will be held Sept. 25-28 at Hyatt Regency O'Hare near Chicago, preceded by three more “green” Webcasts.

One of the themes of this year's conference will be “Green for Good,” which emphasizes the achievement and documentation of long-term performance from both new- and existing-building perspectives. Other topics will include the setting of design goals, the specification of products, owner/team coordination, retrocommissioning, operator training, management and procurement, codes and standards, and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems for new and existing buildings. Technologies that will be discussed include controls, windows, lighting, chillers, and steam, ventilation, and rooftop systems. Vertical markets that will be covered include schools, hospitals, laboratories, and office buildings.

The conference's tabletop and booth display area will be expanded to showcase even more products available in the green-buildings marketplace.

Speakers confirmed for this year's conference include names many of you will recognize: Terry Brennan; Hernando Miranda, PE; Jay Santos, PE; David Sellers, PE; Lisa Fay Mathiesson, AIA; and Jerry Yudelson, PE.

For a free preview of Mathiesson's and Yudelson's presentations, register for the “Dollars and Sense of LEED and Green Buildings” Webcast, which will be held Wednesday, March 16, at 2 p.m. EST. The 75-min event, which you can register for at www.engineeringgreenbuildings.com, will focus on the costs associated with pursuing LEED certification on construction projects and the economic benefits of green buildings. Other speakers will be named in the near future. More than 800 engineers, architects, building owners, and design/build contractors “attended” our first LEED Webcast. We expect a strong showing for this one as well.

We look forward to seeing you — online and/or in person — soon. For more information on the conference and Webcasts, visit www.hpac.com or www.engineeringgreenbuildings.com, or write to me at the address below.
