Last November, in the 2006 edition of its annual Networked Controls supplement, HPAC Engineering announced the creation of the Networked Controls Leadership Awards.
Sponsored by the HVAC Products Division of Siemens Building Technologies Inc., the program was devised to “educate and motivate” building owners to “set reasonable budgets for controls procurement, operations, and maintenance” and “prepare facilities and staffs for new control systems” and designers to “increase their knowledge of modern control systems — and the equipment and processes these systems ultimately control — and to put that knowledge to work in designing building-automation and control systems, writing control sequences, and following up on projects.”
With that having been said, I am pleased to announce the first-ever recipients of Networked Controls Leadership Awards:
Design for New Construction: Ministry Health Care (owner) and HGA Architects & Engineers (designer) for Saint Clare's Hospital in Weston, Wis.
Design for Retrofit or Replacement: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (owner and designer) and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) (designer) for the Lyman Spitzer Building on the DOE PPPL campus in Plainsboro, N.J.
Leadership by Building Design Engineers: Control Technologies Inc. for its involvement in the New York City School Construction Authority's Children First project.
Leadership by Building Owners/Managers: Christopher D. Sandberg, principal engineer, energy management systems, Walt Disney World Co., for his work on the Veracruz Exhibit Hall at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Florida.
Recipients of honorable mentions are the Georgia Institute of Technology and CUH2A (Design for New Construction), Tempe (Ariz.) Elementary School District No. 3 and Source Refrigeration & HVAC Inc. (Design for Retrofit or Replacement), Eric Utterson and Ajay Bhargava (Leadership by Building Design Engineers), and the Trustees of Mount Holyoke College (Leadership by Building Owners/Managers).
On behalf of the staff of HPAC Engineering, I would like to congratulate the award recipients and thank all of those who submitted entries. See the Applications & Resources section on building-automation systems/controls next month for summaries and photographs of the winning projects.
