May Heating, Cooling Equipment Shipment Data Released

According to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), commercial-gas-water-heater shipments decreased 5 percent in May 2010 to 5,939 units, compared with 6,220 units shipped in May 2009. Commercial-electric-water-heater shipments decreased 5 percent in May 2010 to 4,457 units, down from 4,691 units shipped in May 2009.

Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of commercial gas water heaters increased 2 percent to 34,690 units, compared with 34,011 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Year-to-date, commercial electric water heater shipments decreased 0.3 percent to 24,188 units, down from 24,250 units shipped during the same period in 2009.

Warm-Air Furnaces
May 2010 U.S. shipments of gas warm-air furnaces increased 17 percent to 172,876 units, up from 148,339 units shipped in May 2009. Oil warm-air furnaces increased 15 percent to 2,408 units in May 2010, up from 2,086 units shipped in May 2009.

Year-to-date, U.S. shipments for gas warm-air furnaces increased 20 percent to 829,523 units, compared with 691,677 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Year-to-date, U.S. shipments of oil warm-air furnaces increased 24 percent to 17,894 units, compared with 14,442 units shipped during the same period in 2009.

Central Air Conditioners and Air-Source Heat Pumps
U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 586,466 in May 2010, down 4 percent from a revised total of 608,254 units shipped in May 2009. U.S. shipments of air conditioners decreased 4 percent to 396,612 units, down from a revised total of 411,703 units shipped in May 2009. U.S. shipments of air-source heat pumps decreased 3 percent to 189,854 units, down from a revised total of 196,551 units shipped in May 2009.

Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners increased 7 percent to 1.39 million units, up from a revised total of 1.3 million units shipped during the same period in 2009. The year-to-date total for heat pump shipments increased 9 percent to 746,224 units, up from a revised total of 687,744 units shipped during the same period in 2009.
