HPAC Engineering Grows Editorial Advisory Board

Alfred E. Guntermann, PE, perhaps best known for his prescient look at energy supplies — the 1976 conference paper “The Mystery of Future Energy Prices,” which one industry executive described as “nothing less than monumental” — is the latest addition to HPAC Engineering's Editorial Advisory Board.

The principal of New Haven, Conn.-based Guntermann Engineering (www.guntermannengineering.com), a provider of mechanical and electrical consulting-engineering services for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, with special expertise in energy-conservation analysis and construction support, Guntermann has 40 years of industry experience, including work on the Santa Ana General Mail Facility in 1982. Utilizing DOE 2.1, he performed more than 350 runs to optimize energy consumption in the 350,000-sq-ft building. The final building utilized optimum insulation, light-colored surfaces, skylights, high-efficiency lighting, daylighting and occupancy controls, and a low-static high-efficiency HVAC system. The building came in 30-percent below budget and was the most efficient operational U.S. Postal facility in terms of British thermal units per square foot per year. Even though the initial contract called for the most energy-efficient building using state-of-the-art systems, including solar, the final design was based on standard off-the-shelf optimized systems.

Guntermann is the recipient of two first-place national American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Technology Awards and is an ASHRAE Fellow.
