Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) recently announced the publication of the first edition of its Phenolic Duct Construction Standard.

An American National Standard, the 144-page Phenolic Duct Construction Standard applies to ducts up to 80 in. by 80 in. that operate to 4 in. wg positive or 3 in. negative pressure.

The publication covers model project specifications, duct-performance characteristics, specifications and closures, fittings and connections, reinforcement, hangers and support, accessories, and an inspection checklist.

Phenolic-foam insulation is a versatile material with high thermal performance, moisture resistance, fire performance, and structural strength. For air-distribution ductwork, it is manufactured into rigid panels with aluminum facings on both sides.

The standard costs $159 in book form, $191 on CD, $262 in both book form and on CD, and $159 in PDF form. For architectural and engineering firms not in the contracting business, government agencies, schools, and libraries, the costs are $110 for the book, $132 for the CD, $182 for the book/CD combination, and $110 for the PDF.
