Throughout 2017, Superior Boiler Works Inc. will celebrate 100 years as a continuously operating business, a milestone only 1 percent of all companies reach.

The company traces its roots to Hugh Gass, who opened Superior Welding Shop on Washington Street in Hutchinson, Kan., in 1917. The company quickly became known as one of the finest welding shops in the Midwest. Superior Welding trained welding students during World War II and graduated more than 200 students from its training classes. Around this same time, the company began to engineer and do work with boilers and pressure vessels under the leadership of longtime owner Clyde Anderson, and the company’s name was changed to Superior Boiler Works.

Over the years, the company has been considered one of the pioneers in the scotch-marine firetube-boiler industry.

“We’re extremely excited to celebrate our centennial throughout 2017,” Superior Boiler Works Chief Executive Officer Doug Wright said. “This is a monumental milestone. Very few companies find the right formula to make it this long, and we have. It’s a testament to our entire team of employees now and before us. The common characteristic is they always listened to what the marketplace and our customers were asking of us, and that’s what we delivered.”

Vice President of Sales and Marketing Gabriel Dauphin added, “More recently, we have expanded our portfolio of products through organic growth and acquisitions to again be responsive to our customers and position us for the future.”

To celebrate its centennial anniversary, the company is planning several events involving employees, customers, and friends of the company throughout the year.
