ASHRAE Recognizes Outstanding Achievements at 2015 Annual Conference

Ninety-four people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the built-environment industry during ASHRAE’s 2015 Annual Conference.

Ninety-four people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the built-environment industry during ASHRAE’s 2015 Annual Conference, held June 27 to July 1 in Atlanta.

Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award

Raymond Cohen, PhD, PE, received the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, given to an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. Cohen is retired and resides in Valparaiso, Ind. He served as Herrick professor of engineering and director of Ray W. Herrick Laboratories at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Andrew T. Boggs Service Award 

Bill Harrison received the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award, which recognizes an Exceptional Service Award recipient for continuing unselfish, dedicated, and distinguished service. Harrison is chief executive officer of Harrison Energy Partners, Little Rock, Ark.

Distinguished 50-Year Member Award

The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award is given to individuals who have been a member for at least 50 years and performed outstanding service. The following received the award:

Journal Paper Award

Crosby Field Award

Didier Thevenard, PhD, P.Eng., and Mark W. Shephard received the Crosby Field Award, honoring the best paper presented before ASHRAE, for “Temperature Trends for Locations Listed in the Tables of Climatic Design Conditions in the 2013 ASHRAE Handbook – Fundamentals.” Thevenard is system data manager, Canadian Solar, Guelph, Ontario. Shephard is a physical scientist, Environment Canada, Toronto, Ontario.

Technical Paper Award/Poster Presentation Award

Limin Zhou, PhD, David W. Herrin, PhD, PE, and Tianxiang Li, PhD, received a Technical Paper Award, which recognizes the best papers presented at ASHRAE conferences, and a Poster Presentation Award, which recognizes peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at ASHRAE meetings, for “A Design Approach for Preventing and Solving Combustion Oscillation Problems.” Zhou is an acoustics test engineer for Akustica Inc., Bosch Group, Pittsburgh, while Herrin is an associate professor and Li is an associate research professor at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.

Tami M. Brandl, PhD; Morgan D. Hayes; Hongwei Xin; John A. Nienaber, PhD, PE; Hong Li; Roger A. Eigenberg; John P. Stinn, PhD; and Timothy A. Shepherd received an award for “Heat and Moisture Production of Modern Swine.” Brandl is an agriculture engineer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Ag Research Service, Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, Neb.; Hayes is a clinical assistant professor, University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.; Xin is Charles F. Scott Bucking, PhD; Andreas Athienitis, PhD, Eng.; and Radu Zmeureanu, PhD, Eng., received an award for “Multi-Objective Optimal Design of a Near Net Zero Energy Solar House.” Bucking is a postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hamilton, Ontario; Athienitis is a professor and NSERC/Hydro Quebec Industrial Research chair and scientific director, NSERC Smart Net Zero Energy Buildings Strategic Research Network, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec; and Zmeureanu is a professor, Concordia University.

Yang Zou, PhD, Hanfei Tuo, PhD, and Pega S. Hrnjak, PhD, received an award for “R410A Maldistribution Impact on the Performance of Microchannel Evaporator.” Zou is a research engineer, Creative Thermal Solutions Inc., Urbana, Ill.; Tuo is a development specialist, R&D Research Center, Praxair Inc., Tonawanda, N.Y.; and Hrnjak is with the University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.

Willis H. Carrier Award

Morgan D. Hayes received the Willis H. Carrier Award, given to a member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at an ASHRAE conference, for “Heat and Moisture Production of Modern Swine.” Hayes is a clinical assistant professor, University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.

Lincoln Bouillon Award

Gregory A. Schnable of the Sacramento Valley Chapter received the Lincoln Bouillon Award, which recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing membership. Schnable is senior sales engineer, Clyde Equipment Co. Inc., Lafayette, Calif.

Chapter Program Star Award

William P. Lee, PE, HFDP, of the Hawaii chapter received the Chapter Program Star Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. He is principal, mechanical and fire-protection engineering, Coffman Engineers, Honolulu, Hawaii.

William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion (RP) Award

Robert C. Kunkel, PE, HFDP, of the Tucson chapter received the William J. Collins Jr. RP Award, which recognizes a chapter RP chair who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE’s RP campaign. Kunkel is a mechanical engineer, KC Mechanical Engineering LLC, Tucson, Ariz.

Environmental Health Award

John D. Spengler, PhD, received the Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental-health issues. Spengler is Akira Yamaguchi professor of environmental health and human habitation, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston.

Government Activities Award

Robert Craddock of the Regina chapter and Ross D. Montgomery, PE, HBDP, CPMP, BEMP, BEAP, of the Florida West Coast chapter received the Government Activities Award, which recognizes individuals for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial, and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to ASHRAE. Craddock is managing director, Inland Metal, Regina, Saskatchewan, and Montgomery is president, Quality Systems and Technology Inc., Parrish, Fla.

Student Activities Achievement Award

Adam Parker of the Southern Piedmont Chapter received the Student Activities Achievement Award, which recognizes a chapter Student Activities Committee chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities. Parker is territory manager, PACE Inc., Charlotte, N.C.

Homer Addams Award

Limin Zhou, PhD, received the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. Zhou is an acoustics test engineer, Akustica Inc., Bosch Group, Pittsburgh.

Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award

Zhecho Dimitrov Bolashikov, PhD, received the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to an investigator for significant accomplishment in the area of peoples’ response to the environment. Bolashikov works at the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Civil Engineering, International Center for Indoor Environment and Energy, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark.
