DOE Recognizes Investments in Rooftop-Unit Energy Efficiency

The U.S. Department of Energy recently recognized six organizations for leadership in replacing and upgrading rooftop units as part of The Better Buildings Alliance Rooftop Unit Campaign.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently recognized six organizations for leadership in replacing and upgrading rooftop units (RTUs) as part of the Better Buildings Alliance Rooftop Unit Campaign (ARC).

Combined, the organizations saved an estimated 1 trillion Btu, or more than $11 million in utility costs, with RTU replacements and retrofits and improved RTU management and operations in a single year.

According to the DOE, a building's cooling and ventilating energy consumption can be reduced 20 percent to 50 percent when aging equipment is replaced with high-efficiency units or retrofitted with advanced controls, with savings per RTU of as much as $3,700.

Through Better Buildings, the DOE is working to make commercial, public, industrial, and residential buildings 20-percent more energy-efficient over the next decade. To learn about Better Buildings' partner results and solutions, go to http://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov.
