Studies Confirm Energy Savings Significant in LEED, Energy Star Buildings
Studies published by the New Buildings Institute (NBI) and CoStar Group report that third-party-certified buildings outperform their conventional counterparts across a variety of metrics, including energy savings, occupancy rates, sale price, and rental rates. Results of the NBI study indicate that new buildings certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System are performing 25 to 30 percent better on average in terms of energy use than non-LEED-certified buildings. The study also demonstrates that there is a correlation between increasing levels of LEED certification and increased energy savings. DOE Implements Criteria for Energy Star Water Heaters
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced new Energy Star criteria for water heaters. The criteria are expected to save approximately $780 million in utility costs, avoid 4.2 million tons of carbon-dioxide emissions, and achieve cumulative energy savings of more than 3.9 billion kilowatt-hours and 270 million therms of natural gas. The new criteria for high-efficiency and high-performance gas-storage water heaters will take effect in two phases. The first phase goes into effect Jan. 1, 2009, and requires gas-storage water heaters to have a minimum energy factor (EF) of 0.62 or be 6.9 percent more efficient than the federal standard. Effective Sept. 1, 2010, Phase Two requires the water heaters to have a minimum EF of 0.67 or be 15.5 percent more efficient than the federal standard...[MORE]

AHRI Certification Programs Hold Performance to a Higher Standard
With today's high energy prices and the need to reduce peak electrical demand, certifying the performance of air-conditioning, heating, ventilation, and commercial refrigeration equipment performance is critical. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) is now home to the HVACR industry's three performance certification programs for indoor-comfort and commercial-refrigeration equipment and components:

  • Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) performance certified (air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment and components)
  • Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) efficiency-rating certified (space and water-heating equipment)
  • I=B=R (hydronic heating products)

To earn ARI and GAMA certification marks, manufacturers' products undergo testing by independent laboratories under contract with AHRI. Equipment and components are evaluated using the appropriate industry standard to certify that manufacturers' published performance ratings are accurate...[MORE]
