Survey: Building Owners Want Smart Technologies

April 30, 2013
Building owners are increasingly recognizing the value of smart-building technologies, and they're willing to pay for them.

2013 may be remembered as the “tipping point” for the adoption of smart building technologies, according to preliminary survey data compiled by IDC Energy Insights.

In a survey of 291 building owners conducted as part of its Smart Building Strategies research advisory service, IDC Energy Insights reports that 50 percent of the respondents use smart-building technologies today, and another 33 percent stated they would use smart-building technologies in the next six months to one year.

In addition, 57 percent of the respondents reported that their companies currently have sustainability goals that they will be striving to reach. Of these respondents, 86 percent use efficiency or energy management as a metric for success in reaching these goals.

Finally, building owners are willing to “put their money where their mouth is” and pay for smart-building technologies. The survey respondents indicated an average spending increase of 18 percent since 2011 for solutions in the top three smart-building solution categories: HVAC controls, lighting controls, and analytics/data management.
