At the close of our 81st year, HPAC Engineering and the entire HVAC industry breathe a sigh. Over the past two years, the country has been rocked by social, economic, and political issues that have changed how we see the world. Obviously, the economy was one of the biggest issues we faced, and there are those among us who say that 2010 is the year in which the turnaround will begin. I'm hopeful they're right. In the meantime, the changes that beset this industry have left an indelible mark: There are far fewer of us working.

Benjamin Franklin has been quoted as having said, “In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes.” In 2003, in our 75th Anniversary issue, Editorial Advisory Board member William J. Coad, PE, FASHRAE, wrote in an essay that there is a third certainty to Franklin's statement: “Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and change.”

As the magazine prepares to enter its 82nd year, we're re-designing it to better reflect the times, to focus on the areas that are most important to you, our readers, and to organize it in a manner that makes it easier to read and use as a resource. Next month we will introduce this new look.

The HPAC Engineering re-design involves more than simply improving the visual impact of the magazine. It's been re-structured to create an environment that draws maximum attention, readership, and involvement from mechanical engineering professionals and facility managers. We'll do this by focusing on five key sectors of the marketplace:

  • Education.
  • Office buildings.
  • Health care.
  • Manufacturing.
  • Government buildings.

Why those sectors? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, plus several surveys we conducted ourselves, those are the areas that have the most activity. They're where the action is. We've also updated a number of internal processes that will enable us to be nimble — as these sectors change, we'll be able to change right along with them, all in the effort to continue our tradition of providing you the best, most accurate, and most useful information to help you remain at the top of your game and successful serving your markets.

We're also in the process of updating the HPAC.com Website to make it easier to find information and to make it more readily available to you.

So get ready: Change is afoot out in the industry and inside the pages of HPAC Engineering.
