Registration for the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC’s) Government Summit 2011: Fuel for a Clean Energy Economy, formerly the Federal Summit, is open. The summit, which will be held May 10 and 11 in Washington, D.C., focuses on governmental leadership in green building and highlights the roles of public-sector building professionals and private-sector partners in making green building a reality.

In February, President Obama announced a series of incentives for private-sector investment in energy and resource upgrades to offices, hospitals, and other municipal buildings. The federal government owns and operates approximately 500,000 buildings. A presidential executive order directed federal agencies to achieve zero net energy by 2030 and employ high-performance and sustainable design principles for all new construction and alterations. At least 15 percent of existing buildings need to meet these guiding principles by fiscal year 2015. Twenty-eight percent of all LEED projects are government-owned.

The U.S. Green Building Council will present the Federal Green Building Leadership Award during the summit. The award recognizes a federal-government employee who has a distinguished track record of driving green-building innovation and growth. Nominations are due by April 1.

Early bird discounts are available through April 26. Government employees can register for $225 ($300 after April 26), employees of private-sector USGBC members can register for $325 ($350 after April 26), and employees of private-sector non-member can register for $350 ($375 after April 26).
