Synergy. It's been a buzzword in the business world for decades. It's two or more things working together to create an effect that is greater than the sum of each working separately. In other words, to make disparate parts work better together than they do alone. Some call this efficiency. Everyone looks for better ways to work together to be more efficient, productive, and profitable.

In today's miserable economy, synergies are more important than ever. They're key to the worlds of engineering, manufacturing, contracting, and facilities management. They impact you, the readers of this fine publication, and, believe it or not, they also impact those of us in the media world.

With this issue of HPAC Engineering, I assume the role of editorial director. I'm certainly no newcomer to the industry. I've been a trade-press editor here for 24 years — some of you might know me as the editor in chief of HPAC Engineering's sister publication, Contracting Business. As editorial director, I now can bring together the synergies of both magazines where and when they make sense, while helping to ensure we continue on our mutual missions to provide the best editorial to both market segments these publications serve.

I've been immersed in the commercial, industrial, and institutional HVACR marketplace for more than two decades and look forward to expanding my horizons working with and learning from the HPAC Engineering reader community. I'm also very excited by the opportunity to work with this magazine's outstanding Editorial Advisory Board and look forward to building a strong relationship with them so that I can build a strong relationship with you, the reader.

Just so you know, the HPAC Engineering editorial team brings to the table a wealth of experience. In addition to my years in the industry, Executive Editor Scott Arnold has been serving the HPAC Engineering readership for nine years and Associate Editor Megan White for four. We will continue working hard to keep you informed, share winning ideas, and maintain the highest quality of editorial to serve you, the building professionals who design and specify mechanical systems for both new and existing commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings.

Please feel free to contact me with your ideas, comments, and other input. I look forward to working with you.
