Fastrack Flashback: HVAC Duct Design for Colleges, Universities
By Renee Chesler
Published August 2007

Throughout much of the 20th century, acoustics and indoor-air quality (IAQ) largely were overlooked in the design of classroom buildings on college campuses. As a result, one typically can find much room for improvement in those areas as older classroom buildings age and require renovation...MORE

Recreation Center Focus of ASHRAE Student Design Competition
Recently, winners were chosen in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' Student Design Competition. This year's contest featured architectural design, as well as selection and design of HVACR systems, for a 60,000-sq-ft community recreation center. The building featured a gymnasium with two full-size basketball courts and a running track, a wellness center with fitness equipment and aerobics rooms, a natatorium with a swimming pool, and racquetball courts. First place in the HVAC-system-selection category went to students who chose a ground-source heat pump with active chilled beams or fan coils in a four-pipe-system configuration for both heating and cooling. The students also used a dedicated outdoor-air system for all spaces, with an enthalpy wheel for energy recovery and a solar-assisted lithium-chloride dehumidification unit in the natatorium space...MORE

Beijing Olympic Villages Gets the Gold
Beijing Olympic Village achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Neighborhood Development (ND) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The village is a multibuilding community housing athletes during the 2008 summer games. Environmental Market Solutions provided consulting services for Beijing Olympic Village. Developed on a 160-acre site, the village includes 42 residential buildings, seven community centers, three commercial and retail-center buildings, a health center, a library, gymnasiums, swimming pools, tennis courts, and a kindergarten. The village is expected to house more than 16,000 athletes. After the 2008 games, the village will be converted into a tourism site and residential area..MORE

U.S. and Indian HVACR Industry Agree to Harmonize Standards
In an agreement between the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE), AHRI agrees to share its equipment- and component-performance standards. The partnership will help facilitate the development of harmonized standards that address India's specific needs and conditions...MORE

Research Advisory Panel Survey
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE's) Research Strategic Plan, developed every five years by the Research Advisory Panel (RAP), is being developed for research priorities for 2010 through 2015. ASHRAE, which funds more than $25 million in research annually, is asking for input on strategic research needs for that period. This survey is available on ASHRAE's Website...MORE

Johnson Controls Improves Campus
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tenn., signed an $89 million energy-savings-performance contract with Johnson Controls to apply advanced energy-conservation solutions, including a biomass gasification system, on its campus. The project is the first signed initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy's Transformational Energy Action Management (TEAM) Initiative...MORE

A Mega-Event for Mechanical-Systems Designers

HPAC Engineering's fifth annual Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference and Expo, which will be held Oct. 21 and 22 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, is dedicated to the design of greener mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. Also, it is a place to network with green experts who will be on hand for two days to provide information and guidance on projects you currently are designing.

The Biggest, Most Information-Packed EGB Event Ever!

ONE: Engineering Green Buildings Conference and Expo

The fifth annual conference on green buildings for mechanical-systems designers and specifiers and the ONLY green-design event focused on mechanical systems in commercial buildings.

TWO: Commissioning Green Buildings Conference and Expo
The inaugural green-design event for commissioning mechanical systems in commercial buildings and the best place to learn about the role commissioning plays in green building, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, and sustainability.

PLUS: Nevada Power Sure Bet Program Conference and Exhibition
A one-day conference and regional-partner exhibition featuring the latest energy-saving technology and energy-efficient-equipment installation services on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
