EPA Science & Tech Center Good as Gold

By Douglas J. Benton, PE
How Kansas City, Kan., facility met U.S. Green Building Council requirements for sustainability, water and energy efficiency, materials, indoor environmental quality, and innovation, achieving a LEED Version 2.0 Gold Rating...[MORE]

Energy Strategy for the Future
The report, "Energy Strategy for the Road Ahead," evaluates how global energy issues, such as energy demand, global climate change, and constrained energy supplies, might impact businesses through 2020. The report, covering four plausible "roads" companies may follow in the future, was compiled by a group of senior executives from a variety of manufacturing and commercial companies who worked with Global Business Network and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program...[MORE]

Free Online Green-Building Education Programs
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) is providing free online education sessions on topics related to green building. Topics will include the liability of building green and marketing one's company or product as green. The free educational programs are designed to help builders and developers implement green-building practices and techniques...[MORE]

Target Finder for Energy Use
The Environmental Protections Agency's online Target Finder helps architects and building owners set aggressive, realistic energy targets and rate a design's estimated energy use. The target and design ratings in Target Finder are derived from the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS)...[MORE]

DOE Sets New Energy Star Criteria for Washing Machines and CFLs
The Department of Energy (DOE) announced that by July 1, 2009, all qualifying Energy Star washing machines will have to be at least 43-percent more efficient than the current federal energy-efficiency standards and have a maximum water factor (WF) of 7.5. By Jan. 1, 2011, all washing machines will have to be 59-percent more efficient than mandated energy standards and will a maximum WF of 6.0. The DOE also announced that as of November 2008, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) must be tested by an independent third party, and as of Dec. 2, 2008, all Energy Star CFLs will be required to contain less than 5 mg of mercury per bulb and meet more-stringent lamp-color requirements. CFLs with reflectors, as well as bulbs with a smaller screw-in base, will have to meet new high-heat testing requirements...[MORE]

HPAC Engineering Introduces Commissioning Green Buildings Event

Introducing CGB
By Jeff Ferenc, Editor in Chief
Time is right for green-commissioning event...[MORE]

  • The first Commissioning Green Buildings (CGB) Conference and Expo will co-locate with the fifth annual Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference and Expo Oct. 21 and 22 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

New EGB 2008 Website Now Live!

Visit www.egbconference.com, the 2008 Engineering Green Building (EGB) Conference and Expo Website, for details on this year's EGB event. The site will be updated regularly as sponsors, exhibitors, sessions, and speakers are confirmed.

HPAC Engineering's EGB 2008 will be held Oct. 21 and 22 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. As the only green-design event focused on green-engineering applications as they apply to mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings, EGB 2008 is a must-attend for mechanical engineers and buildings professionals who design and specify HVAC systems for non-residential buildings. Green design has become the way business is done in today's energy-conscious environment, and EGB 2008 will offer how-to sessions that will help systems designers and building owners understand how to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Register for EGB 2008 by April 15 and you'll receive a free copy of "The Green Building Revolution" by Jerry Yudelson, PE, LEED AP. Yudelson is a renowned green-building industry leader who has trained more than 3,300 building-industry professionals in the LEED-rating system. He will deliver the keynote address, "What We Can Learn from European Green Building Design," at EGB 2008.

Questions? Contact Conference Manager Jeff Ferenc by phone at 312-848-8405 or email [email protected]. Complete event details will also appear in the Engineering Green Buildings Newsletter and HPAC Engineering magazine as they become available.

The Engineering Green Buildings Conference & Expo is produced and managed by HPAC Engineering.

Energy-Recovery Ventilation: an Overview of a Critical Technology for High-Performance-HVAC-System Design

Wednesday, March 26, 2 p.m. ET
Sponsored by SEMCO

The subject of energy-recovery ventilation is filled with myths and disinformation. To be viable in an energy-starved future, HVAC systems must efficiently process ventilation and make productive use of low-grade energy resources ignored or discarded by conventional HVAC strategies. That means air-to-air energy-recovery technologies will be critical and central elements of high-performance HVAC systems that achieve cost-effective "net-zero" building design. As such, they will revolutionize HVAC-system design. Air-to-air energy-recovery technologies take numerous forms, each offering unique capabilities that are superior for specific applications. Each also has unique limitations, and there are challenges to their effective application. The HVAC industry is only beginning to learn how to use these important technologies...[MORE]
