Engineering Green Buildings E-Newsletter
HPAC Engineering is excited to announce the publication of a second e-mail newsletter---this one devoted exclusively to the green-buildings industry. Monthly, we will report on green-building projects in the news, feature articles on energy-efficient ways engineers are incorporating green-building solutions into their designs, and innovative ideas to promote a green-building future.

This newsletter is being e-mailed to the entire HPAC Fastrack mailing list. You received this newsletter because you have received HPAC Fastrack in the past. If you wish to continue receiving this Engineering Green Buildings newsletter, please click here.

Greening America's Schools
By Gregory Kats
The report "Greening America's Schools: Costs and Benefits" discusses the rapidly escalating trend toward the design of green, high-performance schools. The questions of how much more green schools cost and whether greening schools is cost-effective are answered...[MORE]

Building-Code-Requirements and Sustainable-Design Webcast Archive
Greening a fire-sprinkler system requires a lot of thought and research before any real work gets done. Materials, installation process, and source of water are only a few considerations. This one-hour Webcast, which took place Feb. 21, presents “integrated design” considerations of fire-sprinkler systems for green buildings. Click here to launch the Webcast.

3,200 Buildings Earn Energy Star Award in 2006
The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded more than 3,200 buildings with an Energy Star Award in 2006 for reductions in energy bills and greenhouse-gas emissions. These buildings, including schools, hospitals, hotels, and stores, saved an estimated $600 million in energy costs. They also prevented almost 11 billion pounds of greenhouse-gas emissions--equal to emissions from almost 900,000 vehicles. Among the top-performing buildings were 320 supermarkets, 320 office buildings, and 200 K-12 schools...[MORE]

Richard Fedrizzi, the chief operating officer of the US Green Building Council (USGBC), spoke to developers in south Florida about green building. The USGBC, based in Washington, has set up benchmarks by which developers can win green status for buildings or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Factors measured include: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Developers can attain one of four certification levels: LEED, LEED Silver, LEED Gold, or LEED Platinum. Fedrizzi discussed the advantages of green building, how LEED works, and who's doing it...[MORE]
