Paul von Paumgartten & Thomas Hartman to Present Keynote Addresses for EGB 2007
Johnson Control's Paul von Paumgartten will present the opening-day keynote address for HPAC Engineering's fourth annual Engineering Green Buildings conference and Expo, which will be held Sept.17 and 18 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Von Paumgartten, one of the U.S. Green Building Council's most distinguished members and a renowned green-building-industry leader, will speak on achieving and measuring sustainability in green buildings. His speech will address the evolution of the high-performance green-buildings industry, which began as an energy-efficiency movement and has evolved into a performance/sustainability movement with a life-cycle approach.

The following morning, Thomas Hartman, PE, will open Tuesday's sessions with "Leadership: Your Most Valuable Contribution to Sustainable Projects." According to Hartman, an internationally recognized expert in the field of advanced high-performance building-operation strategies, we have the tools and technology to make green happen; what we lack is leadership in the buildings community.

'LEED for High Performance Operations' Public-Comment Period Open
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) invites the public to comment on the draft Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for High Performance Operations v2008 Rating System. This draft addresses aspects of facility management, such as site maintenance, green cleaning, alternative transportation, alternative energy, and water conservation. The public-comment period will continue through Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007. The USGBC will post the comments and responses on its Website...[MORE]

Call for Entries: Sustainable Building Challenge 2007-2008
The International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment's (iiSBE) Sustainable Building Challenge 2007-2008 (SBC08) invites all those with experience in designing, building, or operating high-performance buildings to take part. The SBC08 process will result in the selection of a broad range of high-performance buildings from around the world to be assessed by proponents and then presented and discussed during the World Sustainable Building Conference in Melbourne, Australia, in September 2008. The process is open to any broad-scope assessment system, including LEED. Completed forms are due by Sept. 15...[MORE]

More Companies Add Green Practices
In a recent survey about the outsourcing industry conducted by the Brown-Wilson Group, it was found that more corporations are dumping environmentally unfriendly outsourcers in a trend expected to continue. According to the survey, public companies are more likely to work green practices into future outsourcing contracts because of regulatory, shareholder, and customer concerns. More than 21 percent of public companies already have added green policies into existing contracts, while more than 94 percent of respondents intend to add green clauses when they renegotiate...[MORE]

EPA Hearings Seek Public Input on Stronger Proposed Air-Quality Standards
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold five public hearings to receive comments on the agency's proposed revisions to national air-quality standards for ground-level ozone. In June, the EPA proposed to strengthen the standards, recommending a standard with a range of 0.070 to 0.075 parts per million (ppm). The current standard is 0.08 ppm. The hearings will be held on Aug. 30 and Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m...[MORE]

Google Goes Solar
Google added more than 9,000 solar modules across seven building rooftops and two car parking lots at its Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif. The new system offsets 30 percent of the campus’ peak power, preventing more than 2.5 million lb of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year...[MORE]

Sustainable Green Projects in China
The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development (USBCSD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on international sustainable-development projects in China and other parts of the globe. The initial focus will be on China, where the EPA and the USBCSD will build on existing relationships with the China Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Chinese State Environmental Protection Agency. Specifically, the groups will collaborate by creating a sustainable strategy for cement production in China, by expanding the use of clean technologies to convert waste to renewable energy, and by implementing byproduct synergy...[MORE]

EGB Focuses on the Role of Mechanical Systems in Green Design

As the only green-design event dedicated to mechanical systems in non-residential buildings, EGB 2007 will offer practical and useful technical information on green-building design and technology as they apply to mechanical systems in commercial buildings.

This year's event will be held Sept. 17 and 18 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and will feature special emphasis on the education, hospitality, and government sectors. More than 20 sessions already are scheduled.

This is a must-attend event for all professionals involved in the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of commercial buildings. Only EGB can provide the specific skills and information you need to apply green design to heating, cooling, ventilation, engineered piping, controls, energy management and other HVAC-related engineering specialties. You just can't get this kind of practical, hands-on experience anywhere else!
