Danfoss, manufacturer of high-efficiency electronic and mechanical components and controls for air-conditioning, heating, refrigeration, and motion systems, recently announced it had acquired full ownership of the joint-venture company Danfoss Turbocor Inc., in which it had had a 50-percent owner’s share since 2004.

Danfoss Turbocor develops, produces, and markets high-efficiency variable-speed compressors used primarily in very large commercial air-conditioning applications (75 to 200 tons per unit). It will become part of Danfoss’ Commercial Compressor division, but continue to operate as an independent business.

Ricardo Schneider, chief executive officer for Danfoss Turbocor, said: “We believe that Danfoss is the ideal single owner of this business because Danfoss is a global compressor manufacturer, a well-respected leader in our industry, and committed to the long-term success of our business and our customers’ businesses. Danfoss Turbocor is a strong link in the Danfoss strategy to differentiate by innovation with variable-speed, high-efficiency compressors. We are delighted to become 100 percent part of Danfoss, which will support Danfoss Turbocor in executing our ambitious plans.”

The Danfoss Turbocor centrifugal compressor works without using oil as a lubricant. Permanent magnetic bearings replace oil, reducing frictional losses and making the compressor more efficient. Oil-free operation also reduces complexity while cutting costs.

Headquartered in Tallahassee, Fla., Danfoss Turbocor has approximately 200 employees. It has received a number of awards, including the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) Innovation Award and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Protection Award, for its technology.
